For the first time in the history of the Delhi Assembly, two women have occupied the top positions in the ruling party and the opposition. Earlier, only the post of Chief Minister was held by a woman, but this is the first time a woman has been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition.
BJP has chosen Rekha Gupta, who has reached the Assembly for the first time, for the post of Chief Minister, while Aam Aadmi Party has appointed former Chief Minister Atishi as the Leader of Opposition.
In the Assembly, from 1993 to 1998, BJP had made Madanlal Khurana, Sahib Singh, and a few months before the elections, Sushma Swaraj as Chief Ministers. Sushma Swaraj became the first woman Chief Minister of Delhi. During this time, the Leader of the Opposition was Congress MLA Jagpravesh Chandra.
At the same time, after the change of power in 1998, Congress made Sheila Dikshit the Chief Minister and she remained the Chief Minister till 2013. During this period, in the three terms of the Assembly, from 1998 to 2008, BJP's Prof. Jagdish Mukhi was the Leader of the Opposition and from 2008 to 2013, BJP made its senior leader Prof. Vijay Kumar Malhotra was given the responsibility of Leader of Opposition.
When the Aam Aadmi Party came to power in 2013, its leader Arvind Kejriwal became the Chief Minister and he remained the Chief Minister till mid-2024 in the third term of AAP's rule, AAP made Atishi the Chief Minister.
At the same time, BJP made Dr. Harsh Vardhan the Leader of the Opposition in 2013, Vijender Gupta from 2015 to 2020 and Ramveer Singh Bidhuri from 2020 to 2024. After he became an MP in 2024, Vijender Gupta was given the responsibility of Leader of Opposition.
