Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar on Wednesday told Parliament that the three languages to be learned by school-going children under the National Education Policy (NEP) will be chosen by the states, regions, and students and no language will be imposed on any state.

The three-language formula suggested by the NEP has been at the centre of controversy, as Tamil Nadu has refused to implement it, accusing the Centre of imposing Hindi.

The Centre, however, has denied Tamil Nadu's allegation. Replying to a written question in the Rajya Sabha, Majumdar said the three languages to be learned by children will be the own choice of the states, regions and of course the students, provided that at least two of the three languages are native languages of India. He said the three-language formula will have greater flexibility and no language will be imposed on any state.
