After a long rebuke by the Supreme Court, the Kerala government has finally released Rs 2 billion as compensation to the victims of Endosulfan pesticide. The Supreme Court, in its several orders of the year 2017 and 2019, had asked the state government to give compensation of five lakh rupees to each victim.
The number of people affected by this agrochemical in Kerala is more than five thousand. Many of these victims today are mentally handicapped, while many are victims of physical disabilities. Many sufferers are facing skin disorders and many cancers. In such a situation, getting compensation is like a victory for the victims and human rights activists.
Just imagine the cost of using or coming into contact with a pesticide, which future generations are also doomed to bear! Endosulfan is an insecticide developed in the year 1950, which is used in agriculture to kill insects, especially on crops. India was once the largest producer and consumer of endosulfan. Ignoring the ill effects on human health and the environment, its use continued in the country indiscriminately. This chemical was sprayed for many years in the cashew plantations of Kerala.
As a result, a large number of insects and small creatures started dying and farmers, agricultural laborers as well as their families started falling ill. Within a few years, the pesticide dissolved in the soil, water, and air there. Thousands of people started falling prey to it. It was like a curse for the generations to come.
Most pesticides make food toxic as well as contaminate soil, water, and the environment. They enter the human body through food, drinking water, and air and pose a risk of kidney, liver, immune system, decreased fertility, and mental retardation.
They are causing physical disorders, mental disabilities, and deaths worldwide. The 2011 Stockholm conference banned the global production and use of endosulfan insecticide. The Supreme Court banned its production, sale, and use on 13 May 2011.
However, despite the legal ban, its use continued indiscriminately, and as a result of which the chemical used to increase agricultural production started consuming human resources. Taking lessons from Endosulfan, the use of any kind of harmful chemicals in agriculture must be stopped, otherwise, it will prove to be a serious threat to humanity.
