Anti-hijab protests that began on September 16 in Iran are still ongoing. Meanwhile, media reports claimed that for the first time a person involved in the protest has been sentenced to death. Apart from this, 5 people have been sentenced to 10 years.
The man, who has been sentenced by a Tehran court, is accused of setting fire to government buildings, inciting riots, and conspiracy against national security. It is being said in the reports that all those who have been sentenced can challenge the court.
Charges against 750 people from three provinces
According to the data, more than 750 people from three provinces have been charged for participating in the demonstration on Sunday. Earlier, more than 2,000 people have been charged in the capital Tehran since the protests began in September.
Mojtaba Gharemani, the judicial chief of the southern province of Hormozgan, said 164 people were charged after the recent riots. He was charged with abetment to murder, harming security forces, propaganda against the regime, and damage to public property.
When and for what reason did the hijab controversy start?
After the death of 22-year-old Mehsa Amini in police custody on September 16, people took to the streets. Actually, on September 13, Mahsa had come to Tehran to meet her family. She was not wearing a hijab. The police immediately arrested Mahsa. He died 3 days after his arrest.
The cause of Amini's death was told due to be a head injury, but her family members claimed that she did not have any pre-existing disease. What happened between Mahsa's arrival at the police station and going to the hospital is not yet clear. Since then, the matter came into the limelight and people started protesting about it.
Claim- Police killed many protesters
This happened to many people like Mahsa Amini. Many people were arrested for participating in the protest against the hijab, after which they died. Reports claimed that protestors were arrested and killed, but the police rejected all these claims.
On the other hand, in the case of Mahsa Amini, the police said that the police did not beat up Mahsa. On 13 September several girls were arrested. One of them was Amini. She fainted as soon as she was taken to the police station.
More than 250 arrests for suppressing the demonstration
Police also arrested more than 250 people in cities with Kurdish populations. Security forces are conducting operations against the protesters. Houses were being raided. Iran's Revolutionary Guard is also involved in the operation.
A Kurdish activist reported that security forces were targeting people working for the Kurds. Despite this, the people there said that until Mehsa gets justice, the demonstrations will continue. After this, the situation of the demonstration became direr, even riots broke out.
