Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday praised former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Gadkari said that the economic reforms initiated by Manmohan Singh as Finance Minister in 1991 gave a new direction to India as it ushered in a liberal economy. Gadkari was addressing the 'TIOL Awards 2022' ceremony.
The country will remain indebted to Manmohan Singh.
He said- 'India needs a liberal economic policy, to benefit the poor as well. The economic reforms initiated by the then Finance Minister Manmohan Singh in 1991 gave a new direction to India. The country will remain indebted to him for economic reforms. I was a minister in Maharashtra in the 90s. We tried hard to raise money to build roads. We were able to raise funds for road projects only because of the economic reforms initiated by Manmohan Singh.
China is the best example of liberal policy
The Road Transport Minister also said that China is a good example of how liberal economic policy can help in the development of any country. On the other hand, in the context of India, he said that India will need more capital expenditure investment to accelerate economic growth. Therefore NHAI is also raising funds for the construction of highways from the common man.
Gadkari said that his ministry is building 26 green expressways and he is not facing any shortage of funds. According to him, NHAI's toll revenue will be ₹ 1.40 lakh crore by 2024, from ₹ 40,000 crores per annum at present.
