New Delhi. Amidst the Corona crisis, the central government decided to lift excise duty by September from ventilators, testing kits and masks. Along with this, exemption has also been given for medical cess on these devices. This will ensure adequate supply of ventilators and testing kits in the country amid the epidemic. Also, the prices of personal protection equipment (PPE) kits and all kinds of masks will also be reduced.
The Department of Revenue reported on Thursday that ventilators and other medical devices are in great demand during the Corona epidemic. In such a situation, the government is immediately withdrawing the duty and cess on their imports. Also, this exemption will continue on preparing them in the country. At present, the government has fixed this exemption period as 30 September.
How much duty had to be paid now?
Presently, 10% excise duty was being levied on ventilator and testing kits, 7.5% on masks, 7.5 to 10% on PPE kits. Apart from this, 5% medical cess was charged separately on all these things.
China is the largest exporter of corona kits in the world
With the increase in Corona infection, demand for these things is going up in the domestic market rapidly. India has already banned the export of kits associated with the treatment of corona. So that their availability remains in the country. Trade experts have welcomed the government's decision to lift excise duty and cess. China is the world's largest exporter of ventilators, corona kits and masks these days.
