Ghaziabad, Jan 5 (IANS) Huge traffic jams were witnessed on National Highway-24 and NH-58 Monday inconveniencing a large number of commuters bound for the national capital, said police.
Police said a leakage from a pipeline running parallel to NH-24 caused a part of the road to cave in. Since the cave-in occurred during the peak hours Monday the traffic jam stretched to seven km.
As a result, Delhi-bound commuters from Ghaziabad, Noida, Hapur and Meerut were greatly inconvenienced.
The pipeline from Ganga water treatment plant in Pratap Vihar here caters to Noida and Indirapuram.
Traffic police had to divert the vehicles from NH-24 towards Greater Noida via Crossing Republik which joins the highway at Model Town police post opposite Shipra Suncity.
With the increasing pressure on NH-24, the police diverted the traffic towards NH-58 from Dasna flyover which caused traffic jams at Mohan Nagar.
"The traffic jam started at 8.00 a.m. The situation returned to normal by 6.00 p.m. after teams from Jal Nigam, Municipal Corporation and PWD repaired the road," said Traffic Inspector Anil Yadav
"I have constituted an inquiry committee headed by Ghaziabad Development Authority Chief Engineer V.K. Goel," said District Magistrate Vimal Kumar Sharma.
