40 Million More Pushed Into Food Crisis In 2021: The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on Wednesday that conflict, climate change, and the economic crisis have devastated people's livelihoods, leaving people who faced hunger last year. The number of people increased to 193 million. Experts have warned that Russia's war in Ukraine could lead to famine, with the FAO saying in an annual report that about 40 million more people were pushed into 'acute food insecurity in 2021.
Of the 53 countries facing hunger, the most affected is the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Yemen, and Afghanistan - where millions are starving as the country plunges into financial trouble after the Taliban takeover in 2021.
What is 'Acute Food Insecurity
According to the United Nations, 'acute food insecurity is defined as when a person's ability to consume enough food puts his or her life or livelihood in immediate danger. "It is a hunger that can lead to famine and widespread death," the FAO said.
The number has risen steadily since the first reports were published by the FAO, the World Food Program, and the European Union in 2016. The FAO said growth in 2021 is driven by a "toxic triple combination of conflict, weather extremes, and economic shocks, affecting people in 53 countries."
The report ignores Ukraine conflict
Although the report did not take into account the conflict in Ukraine, the FAO said that the war "has the most devastating impact on countries with food crises and those on the brink of famine".
Russia and Ukraine are major exporters of essential agricultural products, ranging from wheat and sunflower oil to fertilizers, and the FAO has previously said the conflict pushed world food prices to an all-time high in March. "The war has already exposed the interconnected nature and fragility of global food systems," the FAO said.
The agency noted that several countries battling major food crises received almost all of their wheat imports from Russia and Ukraine last year, including Somalia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Madagascar.
"Today, if more is not done to support rural communities, the scale of the devastation in terms of hunger and lost livelihoods will be catastrophic," the report said. is required."
This was the reason for hunger in 2021
In 2021, conflict and insecurity were the main causes of acute hunger in 24 countries, affecting 139 million people. The economic "shocks" that were worsened by the effects of Covid affected 30.2 million people in 21 countries. At the same time, extreme weather was the main cause of acute food insecurity for 23.5 million people in eight African countries.
The FAO said it needed $1.5 billion to stabilize and increase local food production in at-risk areas (where the planting season is beginning). While meeting on the issue on Wednesday, it said, "There is no time to waste.
