The next match of the four-match Test series between India and Australia will be played in Indore. Before this, the Australian team suffered a big setback. Star fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the entire series. He is battling a leg injury and hasn't been able to recover from it. He suffered this injury during the Test against South Africa in Sydney. However, there is also talk in the Australian media that three more players may be ruled out of the series due to injury. These include David Warner, Ashton Agar, and Matt Renshaw.
Hazlewood's exit is a matter of concern for the Kangaroos as he is one of the best Test bowlers. The Australian team missed him in the first two Tests. At the same time, among the remaining three players, Warner is a regular part of the team. Matt Renshaw became Warner's concussion replacement in the second Test. Warner batted in the first innings and Renshaw in the second innings. The Australian team can be in trouble if four players are out.
Captain Pat Cummins has also returned to Australia for family reasons but will be back in time for the third Test starting March 1 in Indore. Warner was hit in the head by Siraj's bouncer while batting in the second Test and suffered a fracture in his hand. However, he will remain with the team for further Tests. A team spokesperson said any changes to the squad would be announced on Wednesday following talks with the selectors and the medical team.
According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, players like Ashton Agar and Matt Renshaw may also return home. Spinner Todd Murphy is also reportedly nursing a hamstring injury which has kept him from bowling much in the second innings of the second Test. Apart from this, Cameron Green and Mitchell Starc, who did not play in the first two Tests against India due to being unfit, can be included in the playing XI for the Indore Test starting from March 1.
Australia is already 2-0 behind India in the series. With the loss of one more Test, the team will also lose the series. Also, they will have to fight to reach the final of the World Test Championship. On the other hand, Team India will secure their place in the finals by winning one more Test. If this happens, it will be the second time that the Indian team will qualify for the final. Team India reached the finals in the first edition of the World Test Championship as well, when New Zealand defeated India in the title match.
