Blind women cricketers from India and Pakistan surprised everyone by shaking hands with each other in Sri Lanka on Sunday, putting the political tensions between the two countries behind them. According to the tournament organizers, this is the world's first blind women's T20 match. Here, the players from both countries were successful in demonstrating that even though they cannot see, they are full of sportsmanship and mutual respect.
Things have changed both on and off the field since the war between the two countries in May. Tensions between the two countries have escalated since then. The Indian men's team refused to shake hands with Pakistani players during the Asia Cup in September, and the situation hasn't improved since.
Women's teams followed suit.
This tension also extended to the women's teams, who refused to shake hands with Pakistani players during the recent ODI World Cup. In the Emerging Asia Cup in Doha on Sunday, the players from the India A and Pakistan A teams also refused to shake hands, a match India lost.
Although it was expected that India's visually impaired team would not shake hands with the Pakistani team after the match, this was also evident because there was no handshake after the toss. However, things changed completely once the match ended. Both teams greeted each other warmly.
Arrived at the Stadium on the Same Bus
Interestingly, both teams arrived at the stadium on the same bus, and after the match, not only shook hands but also praised each other openly. In the match played at the Free Trade Zone Ground in Katnayak, Pakistan scored 135 runs for eight wickets in 20 overs. In response, India achieved the target in just 10.2 overs and won by eight wickets.
Pakistani captain Nimra Rafiq congratulated India for the resounding victory, while Indian captain T.C. Deepika also praised Pakistan's performance. Both teams applauded each other, although the players were not allowed to speak to the media.
