China today maintained silence over India's absence in the vote at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on the human rights situation in Xinjiang but made a statement in its defense of Uighur Muslims. China said on India's statement that we aim to combat terrorism and separatism. China's remarks came a day after India abstained from voting on the Xinjiang issue at the UNHRC on Thursday and New Delhi for the first time called for respecting and guaranteeing the rights of the people of the autonomous region.
China's clarification of India's statement
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said, 'I have noted the relevant reports. I want to emphasize that the issues related to Xinjiang are not related to human rights. They are related to violent terrorism, fundamentalism, and separatism. Responding to a question on Indian counterpart Arindam Bagchi's remarks, Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said, "Thanks to tireless efforts, there has been no violent terrorist incident in Xinjiang for five consecutive years."
India stayed away from voting in UNHRC
Meanwhile, Mao remained silent on India abstaining from voting on the resolution at the UNHRC in Geneva. A resolution was brought to the UNHRC, calling for a debate on the human rights situation in Xinjiang. 17 members voted in favor, 19 members voted against and 11 members including India, Brazil, Mexico, and Ukraine participated in the 47-member council to hold a debate on the state of human rights in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Not Taken.
