The government wants to set up an Appellate Committee to look into the way companies deal with consumer complaints related to internet media content and other issues. Veteran internet media company Meta and microblogging site Twitter are pushing for the formation of their appellate committee. On the other hand, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is in favor of setting up a three-member committee to look into the complaints.
Meta is owned by Facebook and WhatsApp. The committee will be constituted through changes in the Information Technology Act, 2021. It is being considered to have a provision wherein Internet media companies will have to accept consumer complaints within 24 hours. These complaints will also have to be resolved within 15 days.
If a user is not satisfied with the decision of the Grievance Officer of Internet Media, he can approach the Appellate Committee within 30 days. The range of complaints can range from child harrasment abuse material to patent infringement, misinformation, and material threatening the unity and integrity of the country.
