The BCCI has so far earned over Rs 46000 crore through the TV and digital rights of IPL, making it one of the richest leagues in the sports world. According to the information received so far, the TV rights of the Indian subcontinent in Package-A for 410 IPL matches between 2023 and 2027 have been sold for Rs 23575 crore i.e. the price per match will be Rs 57.5 crore.
Package-B i.e. digital rights for the Indian subcontinent was sold for Rs 50 crore per match, which was bought by one of the bidders after facing the challenge of getting Package-A. Rs 20500 crore has been received from Package-B i.e. after selling two packages, Rs 44075 crore has come in BCCI's bag. By the time the auction stopped on the second day, Rs 2000 crore had been bid for Package-C. Now on the third day, the bidding will take place. In this way, the board has earned Rs 46000 crore so far, which is more than two and a half times the Rs 16347 crore received in 2018. While BCCI will earn more from this auction, it has also decided to increase the pension of former India cricketers and former umpires.
The base price for TV was Rs 49 crore and for digital rights was Rs 33 crore. A BCCI source said, “Getting Rs 50 crore per match for digital rights is a big deal. The second day's auction ended at 6 pm and we are currently on Package C, which includes the non-exclusive digital rights of 98 matches for five years. Then there will be Package-D, which is for foreign TV and digital rights.
The combined amount of Rs 107.5 crores per match has put IPL on the list of the most expensive leagues in the world. Sources said that the TV and digital media rights have been acquired by two different media companies. The names of these companies are not yet officially known. The names of the winners of the IPL package cannot be announced before the auction process is over. However, sources revealed that Star Disney has been able to retain the TV rights again, while the digital rights have been acquired by Viacom-18, a subsidiary of Reliance.
In this way, media rights are divided into four packages-
- TV rights for the Indian subcontinent in Package-A
- Digital rights for the Indian subcontinent in Package-B
Package-C will include digital broadcast rights for select 18 matches per season, including the first match of the season, the evening match in each double header on the weekend, and four playoff matches.
- TV and digital broadcast rights outside the Indian subcontinent in Package-D
