KKR vs PBKS: Kolkata-Punjab Match Abandoned Due to Rain—Which Team Benefited, and Which One Lost Out?

Posted on 7th Apr 2026 by rohit kumar

The match between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Punjab Kings has been abandoned due to rain. Rain had been anticipated prior to the match, and once the contest began, the weather indeed caused a disruption. Along with the rain, strong winds were also sweeping across Eden Gardens, causing some of the covers to blow away. However, the ground staff promptly brought in fresh covers and re-covered the playing area.

Punjab fans are likely to be disappointed by the abandonment of this match, as their team has been in magnificent form. Punjab had secured consecutive victories in their last two matches. In contrast, Kolkata suffered defeats in both of their opening games. Their start in this match was also far from ideal, as they had already lost two wickets for just 25 runs. For Kolkata, the top order has proven to be a major concern over their last two outings.

Kolkata vs. Punjab Match Abandoned

The Kolkata vs. Punjab match has fallen victim to the rain. In this contest, KKR won the toss and elected to bat first. Play subsequently commenced, and Punjab's fast bowler, Xavier Bartlett, delivered a brilliant spell. He capitalized on the moisture in the pitch to claim two wickets for Kolkata. Bartlett claimed the scalps of Finn Allen and Cameron Green.

The match had progressed for just 3.4 overs before the rain began to fall. Play had to be halted following the downpour, and the rain continued intermittently across Kolkata thereafter. At one point, the rain ceased, and the covers were removed. However, no sooner had the covers been taken off than the rain started up again, prompting the umpires to make the decision to abandon the match. To constitute a valid contest of at least five overs per side, play would have needed to resume by 11:14 PM; however, due to the persistent rain, this proved impossible.

Both Teams Awarded One Point Each

Following the abandonment of the match, both teams have been awarded one point each. The Punjab team was in superb form and would have been aiming to secure a victory in this match—their third consecutive win. They had also made a promising start with the ball. Consequently, they are bound to feel disappointed by this outcome. Meanwhile, the season has gotten off to a poor start for Kolkata, as they suffered defeats in both of their opening matches.

Had the match been limited to 5 overs, it would have been a difficult situation for Kolkata; with only 8 balls remaining in such a scenario, they would not have been able to post a substantial total. Consequently, the Kolkata team will likely be pleased with the match being abandoned. Conversely, the Punjab team is bound to be disappointed, as they would have held the upper hand had the match proceeded as a 5-over contest.
