Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, who is facing criticism for his comments on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has approached the Madras High Court. Kamra has sought transit anticipatory bail in connection with an FIR lodged against him. The matter is likely to be heard in the afternoon session of the court on Friday.
A zero FIR was registered against Kamra following a complaint by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel and was later transferred to Khar police station in Mumbai. The FIR cites sections 353(1)(b), 353(2) (public mischief) and 356(2) (defamation) of the Indian Justice Code.
Kamra's lawyer said the stand-up comedian is receiving death threats. According to his Instagram bio, Kamra is currently in Puducherry.
Time to give 'prasad' to Kamra: Shiv Sena
Maharashtra minister Shambhuraj Desai on Thursday said it was time for him (Kunal Kamra) to take 'Shiv Sena ka prasad'. Desai alleged that the comedian had 'intentionally' insulted prominent personalities like Shinde, Sitharaman, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"Kunal Kamra has crossed all limits; things have gone out of hand and it's time to give him 'prasad'. Wherever he is hiding, we will bring him out," Shambhuraj Desai had said. Kamra will have to face the consequences of his actions."
Kamra had called Eknath Shinde a 'traitor'
Kunal Kamra had sung a parody of a song from the Hindi film Dil To Pagal Hai calling Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde a traitor at the Habitat Studio of Unicontinental Hotel in Khar, Mumbai.
