Lumpy Virus: Lumpy spread to 251 districts of 15 states, about one lakh cows died

The lumpy virus has taken a frightening form in the country. The virus has spread to 251 districts of 15 states and has engulfed more than 20.56 lakh cows. About one lakh cows have died. In Rajasthan, more than 13.99 lakh cows are infected and more than 64 thousand have died. This has a direct impact on livestock farmers and farmers.

 

 

More than 3.60 crore cows have been identified in the vulnerable category in the country. According to official figures, 97,435 cows lost their lives till the evening of 23 September. However, unofficial figures are being told much higher. The central government has asked the states to intensify the vaccination campaign to protect cows from the disease. Advisory is also being issued continuously. Experts say that the initial cases of infection from lumpy were reported in the year 2019. Then it was not taken seriously at the administrative level, otherwise, the situation could have been saved from deteriorating. At the same time, the Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Dr. Sanjeev Balyan said, the Center will consider including the vaccination campaign to prevent the lumpy virus in the routine. He said that the vaccine is being administered completely free of cost.

 

 

The goatpox vaccine given to goats is 100% effective against the lumpy virus. 1,38,58000 vaccine doses have been made available to the states. 1.47 crore doses are currently available. National Equine Research Centre, Hisar (Haryana) in collaboration with Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izzatnagar (Bareilly) has prepared an indigenous vaccine for this virus. This vaccine named Lumpy-Pro Vacc-ind was launched by Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar recently. It will come on the market soon. The responsibility for its production has been given to Biovat Company.

 

Ring vaccination effective

 

Ring vaccination is proving to be effective in the treatment of the lumpy virus. Under this, all the animals are vaccinated within a radius of 5 km of the village having a lumpy infected cow.

 

Relief: 95% recovering from treatment

 

KP Singh, Joint Director, Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) Bareilly said, the average mortality rate due to virus infection is around 5 percent. In some places, 10 percent is reported. But, 90 to 95 percent of the animals are getting cured if this disease is treated based on symptoms.
