The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has retired the number seven (7) jersey in honor of former Indian captain MS Dhoni. According to media reports, BCCI has taken this step after seeing the great works of Dhoni. India had won three ICC titles under the guidance of this experienced player and brilliant captain. Till the time Dhoni played, there were only three ICC tournaments and Dhoni was the first captain in the world to win all three trophies.
This is the second jersey number to be retired in Indian cricket, as earlier BCCI had taken the same decision regarding the great Sachin Tendulkar\'s number 10 jersey and retired it. According to a report in Indian Express, BCCI has informed all the players that the number 7 and 10 jerseys are no longer available.
\"Existing and upcoming cricketers have been informed about the move,\" a board official said on the grounds of confidentiality. They will not be able to select MS Dhoni\'s number seven jersey. Keeping in mind Dhoni\'s contribution to Indian cricket, BCCI has retired his jersey number. Number 10 is already unavailable.
The official said that around 60 numbers have been earmarked for regular Indian players. Even if a player is out of the team for a year, his number is not given to anyone else. Debut players have 30 numbers to select from.
Dhoni had earlier revealed that the number seven jersey was lucky for him as it is his birth date (July 7).
