Gen-Z protesters entered Nepal's parliament, firing and causing chaos; Anger against the ban on 26 apps.

After the Nepal government banned several social media platforms, angry youth entered the Nepal Parliament on Monday in several cities across the country, including the capital Kathmandu Valley.

The protesters broke police barricades and jumped over the gate, and stormed the federal parliament complex in New Baneshwor. The protesters had earlier vowed to maintain peace, but the police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse them. After this, the situation went out of control.

It is worth noting that on September 4, Prime Minister KP Oli's government banned 26 social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Reddit, and X.

Oli gave an ultimatum to the youth.

Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has warned the youth about the protest and said that they should know what price they have to pay for the protest.

According to the Nepali newspaper The Himalayan, the Nepal government has said that the ban on social media will be lifted only when companies like Facebook and YouTube open their offices in Nepal.

The Oli government says that companies providing social media services should come to Nepal and register, and prepare a system to prevent fraud and irregularities. It is worth noting that so far only TikTok, Viber, Nimbuzz, Vitak, and Popo Live have registered in the Company Registrar's Office in Nepal.

Who is called Gen-Z?

Gen-Z means Generation Z is used for those people who were born between 1997 and 2012. This generation has grown up in the era of digital technology, the internet, and social media, hence it is also called 'digital natives'.

Gen-Z are more technically skilled. That is, they are more active on social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, where they show interest in memes, trending challenges and digital content creation. Apart from this, this generation is known for its open thinking and adopting new things.
