Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has declared holidays for schools given the rain alert by the Meteorological Department in Mumbai and neighboring districts. It has been raining continuously for the last three days in Mumbai and surrounding districts. Heavy rains lashed Mumbai and adjoining Thane and Palghar districts on Wednesday, leading to waterlogging and traffic snarls.
Regarding this, CM Shinde has announced school holidays in Mumbai, Thane, Raigarh, and Palghar on Thursday. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more heavy rains during this week in several districts.
Chance of heavy rain till Sunday
The IMD said light to moderate rain would continue over western India, including several districts of Maharashtra, with some areas receiving 'heavy to very heavy' rainfall at isolated places till Sunday.
IMD Mumbai also warned that heavy to very heavy rain is likely over the city and suburbs with the possibility of "very heavy rain at a few places" over the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde declared holidays for schools in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts on Thursday given the situation.
10 districts are on 'orange' alert
As per the notification of the regional meteorological body, 10 districts of Maharashtra are on 'orange' alert today (on Thursday). These include Palghar, Thane, Raigarh, Ratnagiri, Pune, Satara, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, and Gondia; While other districts including Mumbai were put on 'yellow' alert for Thursday.
The regional weather body also issued an orange alert warning for five of these districts for Friday. These include Palghar, Raigarh, Ratnagiri, Pune, and Satara. It further said that 'heavy to very heavy' rainfall is likely at isolated places over Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Pune till Sunday.
Thane has been put on yellow alert for the remaining days till Sunday. The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain at isolated places in the city till the weekend. Other districts in Maharashtra include Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Buldana, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli Gondia, Nagpur, and Washim which have been put on 'yellow' alert till Sunday. The IMD said that there is a possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, strong winds, and heavy rain at isolated places in these areas.
