More than 50 were detained and five FIRs registered
Police Commissioner Ravindra Singhal said on Tuesday that more than 50 people have been detained and five FIRs have been registered in connection with the violence in Nagpur city. Violence broke out in central Nagpur on Monday evening, in which stones were pelted at the police. Rumors spread that the holy book was burnt during a protest organized by a right-wing organization to remove the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb (located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district).
Nagpur in-charge minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said the atmosphere was vitiated through social media and appealed to the opposition not to politicize the issue. Bawankule, who held a review meeting with the police commissioner and district collector, also appealed to members of all communities to maintain harmony. "There was no lapse on the part of the home department. The police stood as a shield between the Hindu and Muslim communities (during the violence), in which several policemen were injured," he said. Bawankule said the situation is a bit tense at the moment but there is peace in the city as adequate police force has been deployed.
