The Enforcement Directorate, which is probing the National Herald case's money laundering case, has strongly opposed the summoning of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge. Party spokesperson and senior leader Jairam Ramesh have expressed strong objections to this. He said it was an attempt to demean Congress. Stop insulting the Speaker and the Presiding Officer of Rajya Sabha.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that Kharge was not an accused in the case, yet he had assured the ED that he would fully cooperate in the investigation. He will appear for questioning when Parliament is not in session, but the ED did not agree. Congress Chief Whip Ramesh appealed to the Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman to save the members of Parliament from harassment.
Ramesh said the sole purpose of summoning Kharge was to search YIL in the National Herald case and record his statement in that regard. The process could have been completed in the presence of a lawyer authorized by Kharge, but the ED rejected his request and insisted on the presence of the Leader of the Opposition. Its sole purpose was to humiliate Kharge and Congress.
The Congress leader demanded that because of such circumstances, it is necessary to maintain the honor and tradition of Parliament and MPs. The Presiding Officers of both the Houses should consult and ensure that such blatant insults to Parliament and MPs are not repeated.
Let us tell you, Kharge was summoned by the ED to the 'Herald House on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg near ITO, Delhi. He left the proceedings of the House and met the ED officials. The ED wanted Kharge to be present as a company official during the raid on the office of Young Indian. The ED has questioned Congress President Sonia Gandhi and MP Rahul Gandhi several times in this case. The investigation is on into the matter.
