In the academic session (2022-23), it will now be mandatory to study disaster management in undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programs. The National Institute of Disaster Management under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs with a team of experts from 18 universities has prepared the model curriculum for undergraduate and postgraduate programs under the New Education Policy 2020 and UGC guidelines. The vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to make the country safe in the field of disaster management by 2030. In this, the youth has to be linked with employment by developing skills in this field.
Secretary, University Grants Commission, Prof. Rajneesh Jain has sent hybrid model courses of UG and PG to all universities and colleges. Like other degree programs under the academic session 2022-23, this course will also provide an entry-exit facility to first, second, and third-year students. That is, after completing the first year of studies, the student will be given a certificate course and a diploma in the second year. There will also be the facility of Academic Bank Credit (ABC). The credits of the student will continue to be added to this.
Lessons on reducing disaster risk in the first year
In the Humanities, Science, Commerce, Engineering, Management courses of the undergraduate program, in the first year, students will be offered a certificate course on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management. This course has been designed in such a way that through this education and skill development, they can make their future in this field.
This course is important
There are 3.73,99,388 crore students registered in higher education. In this, there are 2.98, 29, 075 crore students registered in various undergraduate programs. This number is more than the Indian Armed Forces. Which is considered to be the largest armed force in the world. If so many youths make their future by studying in the field of disaster management, then it will be of great help in disaster management.
40 percent of local disasters will get information
India is a vast country. Based on the geographical area here, from the cracking of mountains, sea storms, floods to other calamities keep coming. In such a situation, the disaster of every region is different. Therefore, 60 percent of the syllabus in this will be uniform on different topics of disaster management. Whereas 40 will be included based on the local geographical area so that people associated with disaster management can be enabled to help the common people in local disasters.
This will be the format of UG and PG courses
Foundation Course: Disaster Risk Reduction Management will be a compulsory subject in the fourth semester. There will be three credit and 100 marks paper, in which 60 percent marks will be external and 40 percent marks will be internal. There will also be fieldwork of 20 marks. Whereas this entire course will take 45 hours of lectures.
Certificate Programme: Management of Disaster Risk Reduction will be taught in the subject. Along with bookish knowledge, skill development will also be done in this. The eligibility for admission in this program will be 12th pass with 55% marks. Trained professionals will be prepared for this. The program will be of 38 credits based on two semesters. After completing this program in one year, you will get a certificate course.
PG Diploma Programme: In this also, after completing the first year of studies, you will get a PG certificate and after two years you will get a PG diploma. In this, graduates with 45% marks in any stream will be able to take admission. This two-semester program will be of 45 credits in total.
