The Ministry of Education released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023 report on Monday. Panjab University has come to 44th position with a loss of three points in the overall category. Last year PU was ranked 41st. However, the overall score of the university remained two percentage points higher than last year. PU has failed to provide education to economically weaker students in the ranking given based on five parameters. The score of the university was 0.73 out of 20. In the research category, PU was ranked 33rd with a score of 50.65. There has been no change in the ranking of PU in the university category. Out of 100 universities, PU has been ranked 25th with a score of 54.86. Last year also PU was ranked 25th in this category with a score of 52.80. There has also been a decline in the ranking of the pharmaceutical category. PU has dropped from the third position to the eighth position. This time the score of the university in the pharmaceutical category has dropped from 76.46 to 72.34. There has been a big loss in the law category. Last year PU secured 30th rank, whereas, this time the name is not included in the list. In the college category, Government Home Science College, Chandigarh has been ranked 52nd with a score of 55.94. Falling from 46th position in 2022, GHSC-10 is 6 ranks behind this time.
The ranking given based on these five parameters
Universities are assessed based on five parameters by the Department of Education. This includes Teaching Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practice, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach Inclusivity, and Peer Perception. The parameter is further divided into five parameters and each parameter is given a score out of 20 or 15.
Poor performance in these parameters
1. Economically weak students do not have opportunities for education
One point under the outreach and inclusivity parameter is to provide free or low-fee education to children affected by economic challenges and social challenges. PU has failed to provide these students with the right to education. Out of 20, the university could not even score a single number and scored 0.73.
2. Less funding for research and development programs
PU has not got satisfactory funding for research and professional practice. PU has scored 1.14 out of 15 in FPPP (Footprints of Project Professional Practice and Execution Development Programme).
3. Scored five out of 15 in online education
PU's performance in providing online education to students in teaching and learning resources has been weak. The university has scored five out of 15 marks. The online infrastructure for providing PU education has been weak.
4. No more patents registered in the last three years
Under research and professional practice, the number of patents registered in the last three years in the university is very less. The score of the university in IPR and Patents Published and Granted is six out of 15. The number of research and inventions registered and published in PU has decreased in the last three years.
5. PU did not spend a lump sum per student
PU's annual per-student expenditure has been low. Apart from hostels, mess, and infrastructure in the university, proper expenditure has not been made on the education of the students. PU scores 7.07 out of 20 in Financial Resources and Their Utilization in Teaching and Learning Outcomes.
