The government has made it clear that it is not considering enacting a population control law in the coming times, amid the debate over how to curb the growing population across the country. This information was given by the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Bharti Praveen Pawar in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
A United Nations report that came a few days ago claimed that India will overtake China next year in terms of population. There has been a debate about bringing a population control law across the country regarding this. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the central government clarified that it is not considering bringing a law for population control.
Why did the government take this decision?
Pawar said the government accords top priority to the National Family Planning Programme, which is guided by the principles of the National Population Policy, 2000, and the National Health Policy, 2017. So that the unmet needs of family planning can be met with the goal of population stabilization by 2045. He said that the government's efforts to check population growth have been successful and due to this the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) for 2019-21 has come down to 2.0 which is equivalent to replacement (death, as much as death). of birth) level.
He said that 31 out of 36 states and union territories have achieved replacement level fertility. Pawar said modern contraceptive use has increased to 56.5 percent while the unmet need for family planning is only 9.4 percent. He informed that the raw birth rate (CBR) has come down to 19.7 in 2019. "Therefore, the government is not contemplating any legislative measure," he said.
The question was asked from the left party regarding the law
John Brittas, a member of the Communist Party of Marxism, had sought the government's stand on this, citing the claim of a Union minister had brought a law for population control.
India is projected to overtake China as the world's most populous country next year. This information was given in a United Nations report recently. The 'World Population Prospect 2022' by the United Nations Population Division's Department of Economic and Social Affairs stated that the global population is projected to reach eight billion on November 15, 2022.
