Indian cricket has suffered two major setbacks within a week. After Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli has announced his retirement from Test cricket. On Monday, he gave this information by posting on Instagram. For the last few days, it was being said in the media that Kohli has informed the BCCI about his retirement, but the BCCI had asked him to reconsider his decision, given the upcoming England Test series. However, Kohli decided to retire from Tests. This is a big setback for India as on Wednesday (May 7), regular captain Rohit also retired from Tests. Fans are in shock due to the retirement of two legendary players within a week. With this, a chapter in Indian Test cricket has come to an end. India has to tour England next month. During this, the team will play a five-match Test series.

What did Kohli write in his post?

Virat wrote in his post, 'For the first time in Test cricket, I wore the baggy blue jersey 14 years ago. Honestly, I never thought that this format would take me on such a journey. It tested me, gave me recognition, and taught me lessons that I will carry with me for life. Playing in the white jersey is a very special and personal experience for me. The hard work, the long days, the little moments that no one sees, but they stay with you forever. When I am walking away from this format, it is not easy, but it feels right at the moment. I have given my all in it, and it has given me more than I expected. I am grateful to the game, to the people playing on the field, and to everyone who has taken me forward on this journey. I will always look back at my Test career with a smile.' He further wrote his jersey number '269' and wrote 'Signing off'.

Virat will now play only in ODIs

Virat will now be seen playing only in ODIs. He has retired from T20 Internationals after Team India won the T20 World Cup last year. Kohli has played a total of 123 Tests and scored 9230 runs in 210 innings at an average of 46.85. This includes 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries. In his Test career, Kohli hit a total of 1027 fours and 30 sixes. Apart from this, in T20 Internationals, he scored 4188 runs in 125 matches at an average of 48.7 and a strike rate of 137.05. This also includes one century and 38 half-centuries. In ODIs, Kohli has scored 14181 runs in 302 matches at an average of 57.88 and a strike rate of 93.35. This includes 51 centuries and 74 half-centuries.

Kohli has been the captain in all three formats.

Kohli has also captained Team India in all three formats. He became the captain for the first time on the Australia tour after Dhoni's retirement in 2014. From then till the South Africa tour in 2022, he was the captain in Tests. At the same time, in 2021, the captaincy of T20 and ODI was taken away from him. Kohli made his Test debut on 20 June 2011 against the West Indies at Sabina Park. He played his last Test against Australia in Sydney this year.

Kohli's recent poor performance

Kohli's performance was very poor in the last two Test series, and Team India had to face humiliating defeats in both these series. New Zealand came to India last year and clean swept Team India 3-0 in the three-match Test series. In this series, Kohli scored 93 runs in six innings of three matches at an average of 15.50. On the Australia tour, Kohli was able to score 190 runs in nine innings of five matches. This includes a century. Kohli scored a century in the first Test in Perth. After this, he could score only 90 runs in eight innings. Kohli was out eight times, and seven of these times he was out while tampering with the ball going outside the off stump.
