The Devendra Fadnavis government of Maharashtra on Wednesday increased the maximum working hours for private sector employees. The government has approved amendments in the laws in this regard to increase it from nine hours to 10 hours.

According to the statement of the state government, the main reason for the change in the law is to attract investment, create employment, and protect the rights of workers. Let us tell you that after the decision of the state government, those working in private companies will have to work 10 hours instead of 9.

The Fadnavis government approved the changes

In the cabinet meeting held in Maharashtra on Wednesday under the chairmanship of the state CM Devendra Fadnavis, the changes suggested by the central task force have been approved. Let us tell you that Maharashtra has now joined states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana, where such reforms have already been made.

What will change from now on?

In a statement issued by the state government, it was stated that these amendments will be made in the Factory Act, 1948, and the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Service Conditions) Act, 2017.

Let us tell you that after the changes in these rules by the state government, the limit of working hours per day in industries will be increased from 9 to 12 hours. Apart from this, rest time will now be available after six hours instead of five hours. At the same time, the limit of legal overtime will be increased from 115 hours to 144 hours per quarter. However, written consent from the workers will be necessary for this. After the implementation of the law, the working hours will be increased from 10 and a half to 12 hours.

Will have to work for 10 hours instead of 9 hours

Similarly, under the amended Shops and Establishments Act, the working hours per day have been increased from 9 to 10 hours. At the same time, the overtime limit will be increased from 125 to 144 hours, and emergency duty hours will be increased to 12 hours. Let us tell you that these changes will be applicable to establishments with 20 or more workers. Let us tell you that establishments with less than 20 workers will no longer require a registration certificate. They will only have to inform the officials through the information process.

Why did the government take such a decision?

According to the state government, this step will ease business and attract new investment. It will increase employment and also ensure improvement in the wage protection and rights of workers. This also includes giving double wages for overtime.

The proposal was presented last week

It is worth noting that this proposal was presented before the cabinet only last week. The department says that these proposed changes will solve all kinds of problems that have been going on for a long time.
