The central government, which is moving ahead to increase the share of gas in its economy from the current 7 percent to 15 percent by the year 2030, can now buy more gas from Qatar. Talks are going to be held between the top leaders of both countries in this regard.

 

Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamid Al-Thani arrived on Monday on a two-day visit to India and he will have bilateral talks with PM Narendra Modi. In this, the main talk will be on energy and business relations.

 

Discussions will be held between India and Qatar.

 

India is also trying to attract more investment from Qatar's government investment fund and this will also be a major issue in the talks between the two leaders. Given the atmosphere of constant tension in West Asia, Qatar is also emphasizing strengthening defense relations with India. An important announcement is likely to be made in this regard.

 

Why is Qatar important for India?

 

Qatar is a very important country for India's energy security. 70 percent of India's gas imports come from Qatar. Recently, the Modi government has decided to increase the share of natural gas in the country's economy. According to the report of the International Energy Agency, in the year 2024, India will consume about 65 billion cubic meters of gas, which will increase to 120 billion cubic meters by the year 2030.

 

India buys gas from abroad.

 

At present, India buys 50 percent of its gas requirement from abroad, which is expected to increase to 70 percent. Qatar is a reliable country supplying gas to India. In such a situation, India is keen to buy more gas from it. There is also a proposal to increase cooperation between the oil companies of the two countries in related areas.

 

When there was tension in relations with Qatar

 

There was tension in the relations between India and Qatar in the year 2022 when eight Indians working in a government shipping company were arrested on charges of espionage.

 

All these were retired officers from the Indian Navy who were later working in an international shipping company. The court there had also sentenced them to death, but later after a lot of diplomatic efforts from India, they were released.

 

One of these officers has still not returned from Qatar. PM Modi had visited Qatar a few days after the release of the other seven. Then he invited the Emir of Qatar to visit India. Emir Fahim Al-Thani is coming to India after ten years.
