Bengaluru: 'Lives were being lost outside and celebrations were going on inside', Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister apologizes for the incident

It was natural to celebrate in Bengaluru after the victory of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), but the way the celebrations continued inside the Chinnaswamy Stadium despite the death of 11 fans outside would be called the height of insensitivity. However, several hours after the incident, RCB and Virat Kohli posted on Instagram and expressed condolences.

 

DK Shivakumar apologized

 

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Wednesday apologized after 11 people died in a stampede following the celebration of RCB's victory near the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

 

We did not expect such a large crowd - Deputy Chief Minister.

 

Speaking to ANI, DK Shivakumar said that this should not have happened and we did not expect such a large crowd... The stadium has a capacity of 35,000, but there were more than 3 lakh people... (stadium's) gates were broken... We apologize for this incident.

 

Accused BJP of politicising the incident

He accused the BJP of politicizing the incident. The BJP is doing politics...we are very sorry for this incident. We will find a better solution in the future. The Congress leader also said that all government programs scheduled for tomorrow have been postponed following the tragedy.

 

Shivakumar said that all programs except the cabinet meeting tomorrow have been postponed. There will be no celebrations, including World Environment Day.

The Karnataka government announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of those killed in the stampede. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah addressed a press conference and said that the government will also provide free treatment to the injured.
