From the national capital Delhi to the financial capital Mumbai, and in cities nestled in the mountains like Dehradun, as well as Lucknow, Jaipur, Patna, and Bhopal, the air has become suffocating. Air pollution has reached dangerous levels in many cities of North India. The sky is shrouded in a thick blanket of smog and dust.
In Delhi, the AQI (Air Quality Index) has repeatedly crossed 500. Dehradun, Lucknow, and Patna have also seen AQI levels nearing 400, sounding the alarm. Mumbai's AQI is above 300, and Chennai's is between 200-250, indicating concerning levels.
Experts say that industries, along with the millions of vehicles plying on the roads, are responsible for this toxic air. To tackle the problem of air pollution, the central government has made Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates mandatory for all petrol, diesel, and CNG vehicles. Despite this, a large number of vehicle owners ignore the PUC certificate, even though it is not only legally required but also extremely important for the environment and health.
Now the question is, how to get a PUC certificate? What is the complete online and offline process? Let's tell you all the information and rules related to the PUC certificate...
What is a PUC Certificate?
The full form of PUC certificate is Pollution Under Control Certificate. A PUC certificate is a valid document that indicates whether the emissions from a vehicle meet the prescribed standards. It is issued by government-authorized emission testing centers across the country. Driving a vehicle without this certificate is a punishable offense under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
How to get a PUC Certificate?
Take your vehicle to the nearest authorized emission testing center or PUC center located at a petrol pump.
The operator will measure the emission levels by attaching a testing device to the vehicle's exhaust pipe.
If your vehicle meets the prescribed pollution standards, a digital PUC certificate will be issued by the emission testing center.
You will have to pay a prescribed fee of Rs. 60 to 100 for this. Can a PUC certificate be obtained online?
A Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate cannot be obtained online, as a physical emission test of the vehicle is mandatory.
However, after passing the test, you can download and print the issued PUC certificate from the online Parivahan/VAHAN portal.
How to download online?
Open the Parivahan website: parivahan.gov.in or vahan.parivahan.gov.in.
Go to the Online Services section and click on PUC Certificate.
Then enter your vehicle's registration number, the last 5 digits of the chassis number, and the captcha code.
After that, click on Get Status or PUC Details.
You will then see your PUC certificate, which you can download or print.
PUC Certificate: How long is it valid after issuance?
New car/bike: Valid for 1 year.
After one year: It needs to be renewed every 6 months after inspection.
What are the dangers of vehicle pollution?
The toxic gases emitted by vehicles severely degrade air quality. These toxic gases include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and fine particulate matter. If a person breathes such air for a long time, the risk of asthma, lung disease, heart problems, and cancer increases.
Children and the elderly are most affected by this. These pollutants not only harm the air but also damage the soil and water. They also contribute to problems like changes in rainfall and weather patterns. Therefore, getting a PUC test done periodically is the responsibility of every vehicle owner.
