40% of the world's smokers live in China. According to recent research published in the Lancet Journal, they have a higher risk of 56 diseases than non-smokers. This includes many types of cancer to diseases of the heart, brain, liver, and eyes.
Smoking addiction before the age of 20
This research has been done jointly by Oxford University and several Chinese research institutes. For this, data from China Kaduri Biobank was used. In the study, the health of more than 5 lakh 12 thousand people was followed for about 11 years. There were about 3 lakh women in this, but 74.3% of regular smokers were men.
Researcher Liming Li involved in the study told that two-thirds of men in China become addicted to cigarettes before the age of 20. Half of these people lose their lives due to their addiction if they do not quit smoking. Let us tell you that every year one million people die due to smoking in China. That is, on average 3 thousand people are dying every day.
Smoking increases the risk of larynx cancer by 216%.
Scientists found that smokers have a 10% higher risk of developing any disease than people who have never smoked cigarettes in their life. The highest risk is larynx cancer. Its hazard is up to 216%. The larynx is called the voice box or throat.
Regular smokers are at risk of 56 diseases in total. Out of these, 50 diseases can make men and 24 diseases can make women victims. Also, 22 diseases can cause death. Of these, 17 men and 9 women can die. The diseases include 10 heart diseases, 14 respiratory diseases, 14 cancer, 5 stomach-related diseases, and 13 other diseases like diabetes and cataract.
Quitting smoking at the right time is beneficial
Research results say that people who quit smoking before the disease, had the same risk of diseases after the next 10 years as normal people. That is, by quitting smoking at the right time, we can improve physical and mental health. Professor Zhengming Chen, who is involved in the research, says that millions of lives can be saved by increasing the price of cigarettes in China and putting effective warnings on the packet.
