After the Taliban's occupation of Afghanistan, while most countries are busy evacuating their citizens by closing their embassies in Kabul, China has declared friendship with the insurgent group. China said on Monday that it wants to develop friendly relations with the Taliban. A day earlier, an Islamic fundamentalist group took control of Kabul.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told the media, "China respects the right of the people of Afghanistan to freely select their destiny and wants to continue to develop friendly and cooperative relations with Afghanistan." Apart from China, Russia has also indicated to recognize the Taliban government. The Russian ambassador is scheduled to meet the Taliban delegation on Tuesday and a decision can be taken after that. Meanwhile, Britain has appealed to the global community not to recognize the Taliban government.

China said it welcomed the opportunity to strengthen ties with Afghanistan. "The Taliban have repeatedly expressed their hope for good relations with China and they look forward to China's participation in the development and reconstruction of Afghanistan," the Chinese spokesman said. We welcome it." Hua also said that China's embassy in Kabul was still functioning.

The deal was done with the Taliban

During the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, Beijing expressed its desire to maintain informal relations with the Taliban. China shares a 76 km border with Afghanistan. Beijing has long feared that the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan could lead to separatism by the minority Muslim community in Shijiang province. But last month a Taliban delegation met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and promised him that Afghanistan would not be allowed to be used as a base for terrorists. In return, China assured economic cooperation and investment.

Russia can also give recognition

Russia has denied any plans to evacuate its embassy in Kabul, making it clear that the Taliban government can be recognized. Foreign Ministry official Zamir Kabulov said on Monday that his ambassador is in touch with the Taliban leadership. Kabulov also said that if the conduct of the Taliban is good, then its rule can be recognized. Russia's ambassador to Afghanistan Dmitry Zhirnov may hold a meeting with Taliban representatives regarding the security of the embassy.
