In Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, following the death of Angel Chakma, a student from Tripura, his father, Tarun Prasad Chakma, urged the government to ensure equal treatment for all. He said, "Our children from the Northeast go to places like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru for studies or work. They should not be subjected to such negative treatment. We are also Indians. I request the government to ensure equal treatment for all."

The murder of Angel Chakma has now taken on a major political dimension. The opposition has launched a sharp attack on the central government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over this incident. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal have termed it a 'hate crime' and questioned the government's silence.

What did Rahul Gandhi say?

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, strongly condemned the murder of Angel Chakma. Attacking the BJP on Monday, he said that the ruling party has normalized hatred, which is leading to such incidents.

Regarding this, Rahul Gandhi wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "What happened to Angel Chakma and his brother Michael in Dehradun is a horrific example of hatred. Hatred is not born overnight, but is being fostered every day.  Unfortunately, our youth are being influenced by toxic content and irresponsible narratives, which are normalizing such violence in society. India's foundation rests on respect and unity, not on fear and hatred. We are a country of diversity and love. We must not become a silent spectator society that watches its fellow Indians being targeted and remains silent. Today, we need to think about the direction in which we are taking our country. My condolences are with the Chakma family and the people of Tripura and the entire Northeast. We are proud to call you our Indian brothers and sisters."

Kapil Sibal's appeal to Amit Shah

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal also criticized the central government on this issue. He appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to raise his voice against hate crimes. Sibal wrote on the social media platform X, "The murder of Angel Chakma is a shocking example of a hate crime and bigotry. This case is also proof of the silence of the government and those leaders who are complicit through their inaction." Sibal also appealed to Home Minister Amit Shah to speak out against hate crimes.
