Antonio Guterres has expressed his deepest condolences to the affected families, the people of the country, and the Government of Congo and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
Reason for firing not yet known: Bintou Keita
Bintou Keita, the UN Special Representative and the head of the UN Stability Mission in Congo (MONUSCO), said that under what circumstances did the peacekeepers open fire at the border post, there is no concrete information about them yet. He said that this serious incident has sent a wrong message to the world. Bintou Keita said that we strongly condemn this incident and express our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased who lost their lives.
Anger against peacekeepers after the incident
A video of the incident was shared widely on social media and it showed UN peacekeepers opened fire on two people before opening a barricade. Congo's government condemned the incident and said that it has started an investigation with MONUSCO. "The Democratic Republic of the Congo strongly condemns this unfortunate incident in which two compatriots were killed and 15 others were injured," the government said in a statement.
