The Delhi government has accused Haryana of conspiring to give water to Delhi. Water Minister Atishi said that Haryana is conspiring against Delhi.
She said that despite the hearing of the case in the Supreme Court, Delhi's water supply is being reduced. For the last three days, Haryana is continuously releasing less water for Delhi. Today at 11 am I will visit Wazirabad Barrage and expose Haryana's conspiracy.
Like the past days, people in many areas of the capital had to face drinking water shortages on Thursday as well. Especially in the slum areas of New Delhi area and many areas of East Delhi, people kept wandering for water. As soon as water tankers reached these areas, people rushed to fill them with water. Due to this, the tankers were emptied in a few moments. There was also an argument among the people while filling water from the tankers.
Supreme Court orders Himachal to release 137 cusecs of water into Yamuna
On Thursday, the Supreme Court said that the severe shortage of drinking water in Delhi is the biggest crisis at present. There should not be any kind of politics on this. The apex court directed Himachal Pradesh to release 137 cusecs of additional water for Delhi on June 7. Also, asked Haryana to ensure a smooth flow of water to Delhi. There should be no obstruction in this. Let us tell you that one cusec is equal to 28.317 liters of water flow per second.
The vacation bench of Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice KV Vishwanathan said, since Himachal has no objection to releasing the additional water available, we direct that it should release 137 cusecs of water from above so that the water reaches Hathinikund Barrage and reaches Delhi via Wazirabad. Keeping in mind the urgent need, the bench directed Himachal Pradesh to release water from June 7 with prior notice to Haryana. The Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) will measure the additional water coming to Hathinikund so that it can be made available for drinking to the people of Delhi.
Delhi government should ensure that there is no wastage of water
The bench directed the Delhi government not to let water get wasted. The bench has asked the respondents including the Delhi government, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh to submit a compliance affidavit and status report by Monday. The next hearing will be on June 10. The bench had earlier directed the board to hold a meeting with all stakeholder states on June 5.
No complaint should come to us tomorrow
The bench said, we do not know who is doing politics, but tomorrow there should not be a complaint that Himachal is giving water, but Haryana is not leaving. The court directed Haryana to give way to the flow of water through canals.
Himachal has no record of available water
The lawyer of the Haryana government argued, that there is no record of the availability of surplus water in Himachal. There is no mechanism to measure the supply of additional water from Hathinikund Barrage. On this, Delhi government lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, the need for water is an emergency and a one-time measure. Himachal Pradesh is showing humility and decency.
Himachal government has no objection
The Himachal Pradesh government is providing water to Delhi regularly. The government has no objection to giving water. Additional Chief Secretary of the Jal Shakti Department Omkar Sharma said that in the year 2019, the Himachal government had an MoU with Delhi. Under this, water is being supplied.
Water will reach Delhi from the Western Yamuna Canal
After the order of the Supreme Court, the additional water of Himachal will reach Delhi from Hathinikund Barrage through the Western Yamuna Canal via Haryana. Chief Engineer of the Irrigation Department Satbir Kadian said that there will be no obstruction in the flow of water. However, its technical monitoring will be done by the Upper Yamuna River Board. This water will be available for Delhi till June.
