On the occasion of World Water Day, the United Nations (UN) released a report. In this report released on Tuesday, it was said that 26 percent of the world's population does not have clean drinking water. In addition, 46 percent do not have access to basic sanitation. The UN World Water Development Report 2023, has been informed about ensuring access for all people to clean water and sanitation.
The report's editor-in-chief, Richard Connor, told a news conference that the estimated cost of meeting the targets is between US$600 billion and US$1 trillion. Connor said partnerships are being built with investors, financiers, governments, and climate change communities. It is being ensured that the money is being spent on protecting the environment and that 200 crore people can get drinking water.
Water use increasing at the rate of one percent
According to the report, water use has been increasing at a rate of about one percent every year globally in the last 40 years. It is expected to grow at the same rate till 2050. Because, population growth, socio-economic development, and water consumption patterns are changing.
Growing consumption in developing countries
Connor said the increase in water demand is happening in developing countries and emerging economies, where industrial development and especially urban populations are growing rapidly. He further informed that globally 70 percent of the water is being used for agriculture. He said that the method of irrigation of crops has to be changed. Drip irrigation is now used in some countries, which saves water. He said that this will make water available to the cities.
Dangerous situations in these parts
The report said that due to climate change, water scarcity is increasing in areas where it is already low. For example, parts of Central Africa, East Asia, and South America. Apart from this, the situation is going to get worse in the Sahara in the Middle East and Africa.
The report noted that 10 percent of the global population lives in countries with high or significant water stress. 350 crore people face water scarcity for at least one month a year.
