India's pharmaceutical company Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (DRL) announced on 16 September that it would bring 100 million doses of SPUTNIK V developed and approved in Russia to India to stop Covid-19. Before that, it will start human trials of Phase-3 by taking necessary regulatory clearance. It is clear that after the permission, now the trials of the last phase of SPUTNIK V will also start with the Coveshield of Oxford / AstraZeneca. Now there are reports that along with Dr. Reddy's, the Gujarati company Cadila Healthcare is also in talks with the Russian organization. In such a situation, the biggest question remains that when will coronavirus be released? When will the vaccine be available in our country?
So will the Russian vaccine save us from Covid-19?
Dr. Reddy's deals with the Russian Direct Investment Fund for the Russian vaccine SPUTNIK V. Also, she will apply for its phase-3 trials as soon as possible. In such a situation, how long will we get this vaccine, it is difficult to say?
Currently, the Phase-2 and Phase-3 trials of Coveshield of Oxford / AstraZeneca are also underway in India. Its initial results can also be revealed in a month or two. Based on that, the Indian drug regulator will make a decision. It may be decided by the end of this year.
There is also news that the Russian organization RDIF wants to deal with at least four Indian drugmakers. After Dr. Reddy's, he is also talking to Zydus Cadila of Ahmedabad. It aims to increase vaccine production. Gujarat's company talks have reached the advanced stage.
These deals and news mean that the Russian vaccine is going to be mass-produced in India. The ICMR has already indicated that the vaccine may be approved early for high-risk groups and frontline workers. When the vaccine is available will depend on approval.
Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has said in Parliament that all options are open. The vaccine will be available in India early next year. The expert group has done planning for distribution. Even earlier, Harshvardhan had reiterated that the vaccine would be available by the first quarter of 2021 i.e. March.
Can Russians Trust the Vaccine?
Until the data of phase-3 trials of the Russian vaccine is available, nothing can be said about it. Coveshield of Oxford / AstraZeneca was considered by far the safest. But after a woman's health deteriorated in the UK, doubts are also arising.
Russia's Health Minister Mikhail Murashko has said that one in seven of Russia's total 14% of the Covid vaccine is showing side effects in Volunteer. He has got weakness, muscle pain problems. It ends on the second day. This side effect is predictable.
The vaccine also has adverse effects according to primary results published in the Lancet. The highest was 58% of volunteers reported pain at the injection site, 50% with fever, 28% with weakness, and 24% with muscle pain. That is, the Russian vaccine is also not going to come without side effects.
Trump said - vaccine will be available in America from October
US President Donald Trump claimed that the vaccine would be available in the US in October. 100 million doses will be distributed by the end of 2020. The drug regulator's green signals are awaited. At the same time, Democrats allege that Trump's statements are pressurizing the drug regulator.
The New York Times report says that even though Trump claims to have the vaccine in October, scientists, companies, and federal officials are claiming that the vaccine will only be available next year. About two lakh people have died in American due to Covid-19. Because of this, it has become a huge electoral issue.
What is the status of the vaccine so far?
So far, Russia, China, and the UAE are the only countries that have already approved the vaccine developing in their countries before the results of the Phase-3 trials. Russia has also intensified efforts to introduce vaccines to high-risk groups.
At the same time, three vaccines in China have so far received emergency approval. By applying these vaccines, one can ensure protection from Covid-19 if one wishes to apply. However, neither the Chinese vaccine nor the human trials of the Russian vaccine have been completed so far. The UAE has approved the Chinese vaccine.
WHO Says Vaccine Landscape…
182 vaccines are currently being developed all over the world.
36 vaccines are undergoing clinical trials.
9 vaccines are in Phase-3 ie final round trials. There are also four vaccines being developed in China.
146 vaccines are in the phase of pre-clinical trials. That is, their evaluation is still going on in the labs.
