The hijab controversy in Karnataka started in January this year in the Udupi district. In the Government PU College here, 6 Muslim girl students were not allowed to enter the class wearing hijabs. The school administration had said that earlier girls did not come wearing hijab, this step was taken due to the uniform dress in the school. After this, the girl students filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court. Gradually this dispute spread all over the state and due to this, the schools had to be closed for several days.

High Court dismissed the petition

The matter regarding wearing a hijab was heard on a single bench. Thereafter the matter was referred to a larger Bench. On March 17, a bench headed by Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi dismissed the petition of the girl students. The girl students argued that wearing a hijab is their constitutional right. However, the court dismissed his plea saying that wearing a hijab is not a compulsory practice in Islam.

After the decision of the High Court, the Pre-University Education Department of the state government had made the dress code mandatory for PU students. Many girl students tried to enter the examination by wearing hijab. However, he was not given admission. At the same time, a petition has now been filed in the Supreme Court against the High Court's decision in the Hijab controversy.
