While the Indian team was awaiting the trophy after defeating Pakistan by five wickets in the Asia Cup final, Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President and Pakistani Minister Mohsin Naqvi was plotting to take away their joy. The Indian team had already announced that the players would not accept the trophy from Naqvi. Instead of respecting this decision, Naqvi remained adamant and stood on the stage. Later, he picked up the trophy himself and fled to the hotel. Now, Suryakumar Yadav has shed light on this entire matter.
India did not accept the trophy from Naqvi.
Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav said that his team had already refused to accept the trophy, considering Mohsin Naqvi the Pakistani representative. ACC officials tried to intervene and suggested that the awards be presented by Emirates Cricket Board Vice President Khalid Al Zarooni, but Naqvi refused. After nearly an hour of tension, the organizers quietly took the trophy, while individual performers like Tilak Varma and Abhishek Sharma were honored.
Suryakumar reveals the truth about the trophy controversy.
Speaking to The Indian Express on the matter, Suryakumar said, "We didn't close the door and sit inside the dressing room. We didn't make anyone wait for the awards ceremony. They ran away with the trophy. That's what I saw. I don't know, some people were taking videos of us, but we were standing. We didn't go inside."
There was speculation that India didn't accept the trophy from Naqvi because they were following instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) or government officials. But the Indian captain dismissed such claims, saying it was a team decision taken on the field. He said, "First of all, let me make it clear that during the entire tournament, no one from the government or the BCCI told us that if anyone offered us a trophy, we wouldn't accept it. We made this decision on the field ourselves." They (ACC officials) were standing on the stage, and we were standing below. I saw them talking on the stage, and I don't know the details of their conversation. Some people in the crowd started booing. And then we saw their representative running away with the trophy.
Fans and spectators also expressed their displeasure.
Surya clarified that none of his team's players went into the dressing room to retrieve their phones immediately after the match. The team's support staff brought them their phones on the field. During the match, spectators in the stands and Indian fans on social media expressed their displeasure. The spectators even chanted "Bharat Mata ki Jai" and "Modi-Modi." As soon as Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha walked towards the stage, he was booed. Frustrated by this, Naqvi left the field and ran away with the Indian trophy. On the other hand, the Pakistan team remained in the dressing room for a long time after the match, leaving Naqvi alone and uncomfortable for a long time. No one is able to understand whether Naqvi is representing PCB or ACC.
