West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday claimed that the real motive behind the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list is the NRC. Speaking to reporters after garlanding the statue of B.R. Ambedkar on Red Road on the occasion of Constitution Day, Banerjee said that even after so many years of independence, people's citizenship is still being questioned.
In a post on X a day earlier, CM Mamata said that when democracy is at stake, secularism is under threat, and federalism is being dismantled, people must protect the valuable guidance provided by the Constitution.
CM Banerjee said that the Constitution is the backbone of the nation, skillfully weaving together the diversity of India's cultures, languages, and communities. "On this Constitution Day, I pay my deepest respect and homage to our great Constitution and the great document that unites us in India," she said in a post on X.
Ahead of the start of the winter session of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha Secretariat has issued a new bulletin to members regarding parliamentary etiquette and discipline. In this bulletin, to maintain the seriousness of the House, slogans like Jai Hind, Vande Mataram, and Thank You have been banned.
When asked about this, Chief Minister Banerjee said, "Now think about what's going on in the country. Why wouldn't we say it? Jai Hind and Vande Mataram are national songs. These are slogans of our independence. Jai Hind is the slogan of our Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Whoever clashes with this will be crushed."
Regarding Mamata Banerjee's statement, BJP MP and West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya said that she can level as many accusations as she wants. He asked if she wanted to spread communal tension in the country. The BJP leader asked if she wants to create another Shaheen Bagh. He said that the people of the state have resolved not to let West Bengal become Western Bangladesh. He added that no one listens to Mamata Banerjee anymore.
