The Maharashtra government has approved the proposal of the Mumbai civic body to upgrade 92 primary schools into secondary educational institutions in self-finance mode for students from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). There are over 200 secondary schools (providing education up to class 10) in the city run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
Approval of the proposal to upgrade primary schools
The Maharashtra government is approving the proposal to upgrade 92 primary schools of BMC to open secondary classes from the new academic year of 2022-23, said a government order (GR) issued on Wednesday. It said that various elected representatives have been demanded to upgrade the existing primary schools to secondary schools. All BMC schools are affiliated with the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary Education, which is headquartered in Pune.
Upgraded schools will not get financial aid or subsidy
The GR said that the demand to upgrade the existing 92 primary schools to secondary schools was made from time to time by parents, school management committees, local corporators, and legislators. The demand was mainly aimed at students from economically weaker sections who could not afford the fees of private schools. Under the Maharashtra Self-Financed Schools (Establishment and Regulation) Act, the state government on Wednesday allowed the upgradation of 92 primary schools with the condition that the upgraded schools would not receive any financial assistance or subsidy for their functioning.
Must adhere to the standards set by the state
It will be mandatory for these new schools to provide an adequate number of rooms along with all facilities including physical and academic as per the extant policy and norms of the State Government. These schools will have to adhere to the standards prescribed by the state from time to time."
