A severe cold wave is expected to grip North India on January 12th. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that temperatures in some areas could drop to as low as two degrees Celsius.

The weather department has issued an alert for several states, including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Himachal Pradesh. The intense cold conditions in the northwestern region are expected to disrupt daily life.

What will the temperature be in Delhi?

The minimum temperature in Delhi is expected to be between two and four degrees Celsius. The weather department has confirmed the widespread impact of this cold wave. The department states, "The cold wave from the north is reaching as far as Kutch in Gujarat, Punjab, and Rajasthan in the west."

Dense fog in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar

The IMD has also warned of dense to very dense fog in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. This could reduce visibility, making driving difficult and potentially causing power lines to trip. While North India shivers under this cold wave, parts of South India, such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, are expected to experience cloudy conditions.

Global weather patterns may change.

Looking ahead from the current cold wave, Skymet Weather has predicted a shift in global weather patterns. The ongoing La Niña conditions are likely to end in early 2026. This shift could lead to the return of El Niño during the monsoon season later this year, impacting rainfall patterns across the subcontinent.
