There is an all-out attack on Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh's statement regarding Savarkar. First Asaduddin Owaisi and now Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel have also raised questions on the statement of the Defense Minister. Rajnath Singh had said that Savarkar had given a mercy petition before the British at the behest of Mahatma Gandhi. Now Bhupesh Baghel has raised the question that when Savarkar was in jail, how did he talk to Mahatma Gandhi?

Bhupesh Baghel said, 'Where was Mahatma Gandhi at that time? Where was Savarkar? Savarkar was in jail. How did the two talk? Savarkar had given a mercy petition while in jail and continued to support the British. Not only this, he was the first person to talk about two-nation when he came out of jail in 1925.

Rajnath Singh had said, 'Lies were spread against Savarkar. It was repeatedly said that he had filed many mercy petitions before the British government. But the truth is that he did not file the Mercy petition for his release. Generally, a prisoner has every right that if he wants to file a mercy petition, he can. Mahatma Gandhi had asked him to file a mercy petition. On Mahatma Gandhi's behest, he had filed a mercy petition and Mahatma Gandhi had appealed on his behalf, he had said that if Savarkar Ji should be released like we are running a movement to achieve freedom peacefully, So will Savarkar Ji. This was said by Mahatma Gandhi Ji.

The Defense Minister further said, 'But such an attempt is made to defame him that he had filed Mercy petition, he had apologized, he had talked about release, all these things are wrong and baseless.'
