On March 28, a powerful earthquake struck Myanmar. Its tremors were felt till Thailand, Vietnam, China, India and Bangladesh. Due to military rule and ban on internet in Myanmar, accurate information about the damage and destruction is not available. Now the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has released satellite images showing the devastation caused by the earthquake.
Images taken from Cartosat-3
ISRO has shared before and after pictures of the earthquake taken from its earth imaging and mapping satellite Cartosat-3. The devastation caused by the earthquake is clearly visible in these pictures. On March 29, a day after the earthquake, ISRO took pictures of Mandalay and Sanong cities of Myanmar.
The agency said that the data received from the same area on March 18 was sent for analysis and damage assessment. Let us tell you that ISRO's Cartosat-3 is a third generation advanced satellite. It has high resolution imaging capability.
Heavy damage in Mandalay city
In its statement, ISRO said that the infrastructure in Mandalay city has suffered a lot of damage. Here Sky Villa, Phyani Pagoda, Mahamuni Pagoda and Anand Pagoda, University of Mandalay and many other major sites have been either completely or partially damaged. Ma Shi Khana Pagoda as well as many monasteries and other buildings in Sanggong city have been damaged.
The historic bridge also collapsed.
ISRO's pictures show that the historic Ava bridge built on the Irrawaddy River near In Wa City collapsed due to the earthquake. At the same time, cracks have appeared in the floodplain of the Irrawaddy River. Water is also coming out from the cracked ground.
The epicenter of the earthquake was near Mandalay.
ISRO said that on March 28, an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude struck Myanmar. After this, a powerful aftershock of 6.4 magnitude came. The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometers inside the ground near the border of Sanggong and Mandalay.
Mandalay suffered the most damage due to the epicenter of the earthquake being nearby. Infrastructure, roads, and residential buildings have been damaged in other cities including Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw.
The first picture of the Irrawaddy River is from March 18. In this, the Iwa bridge looks fine. But in the picture taken on March 29 after the earthquake, the bridge is damaged.
