Pakistan captain Babar Azam is just a few steps away from becoming the number one batsman in all three formats. Babar, who is setting a new record every day on the cricket field, has now secured the number three position in the Test rankings. Babar, the number one batsman in ODIs and T20Is, has moved past former Australia captain Steve Smith to the third place in the list of batsmen in the Test rankings. This is Babar's best-ever ranking in Tests. England star Joe Root is first with 923 rating points and Steve Smith's compatriot Marnus Labuschagne is second with 885 points.
Babar scored 55 runs in the first innings of Pakistan and 119 in the second innings during the first Test. He scored around 55 percent of the runs, with the right-handed batsman contributing 119 runs to the team's score of 218. Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka in the first Test to take a 1-0 lead in the 2-match series while the second and final Test of both the teams is being played in Galle. Babar had said some time ago that his dream is to become the number one batsman in all three formats, although he will have to wait for it due to the excellent form of Root and Labuschagne.
Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma are the only two Indian batsmen in the top 10 of the ICC Test Rankings. Pant is in the fifth position while Indian captain Rohit is in the ninth position. Virat Kohli, who has been in poor form for a long time, is ranked 12th in the batting rankings.
In the bowlers' ranking, Pakistan's Shaheen Afridi has overtaken Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. In the latest ICC rankings released on Wednesday, Afridi has moved up to third in the Test rankings with a career-best rating of 836, while Bumrah has dropped a place to fourth with 828 rating points.
Afridi took four wickets in the first innings of the first Test against Sri Lanka. Australia's Test captain Pat Cummins is at the first position with 891 ratings while Ravichandran Ashwin is the number two Test bowler with 842 ratings.
