India has been at the forefront of Internet shutdowns in the world for the fifth consecutive year. In 2022, the internet has banned a total of 187 times in the world, out of which 84 times it was banned in India. In this too, a maximum internet ban was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir. Here the internet was shut down 49 times in a year. The report was released on Tuesday by Access Now, a New York-based digital rights advocacy group.

Internet remained closed for three consecutive days in January-February

The report said that in January and February 2022, there was a continuous internet shutdown for three days due to political instability and violence in Kashmir. For this, 16 orders were issued one after the other. Since the removal of Article 370 by the central government in August 2019 and the formation of two union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, the government has been continuously banning communication in many areas due to security reasons.

Ukraine was at number two on the list, Iran at third

Ukraine was number two on this list. After the war was waged by Russia on February 24, the Russian army cut internet connection in Ukraine about 22 times. The military carried out cyber attacks and attempted to destroy telecommunication infrastructure.

Iran was at number three on the list where in 2022 the administration did internet lockdown 18 times. Here on September 16, demonstrations against the government took place across the country after the death of 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman Mhasa Amini in police custody. To stop them, the government banned the internet.
