Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has once again supported India for permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov praised India and said that India has played an important role in the Council with its stand on global and regional issues.
Responding to media questions at the Primakov Reading International Forum in Moscow on December 7, Lavrov said, 'I think India is currently one of the leading countries in terms of economic development. Its population will soon be larger than that of any other country. India has vast diplomatic experience in solving various kinds of problems.
UN will be more democratic if countries of Latin America are included
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said India plays an active role in a range of integration structures in South Asia including the United Nations as well as within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Earlier in September this year, while addressing the 77th UN General Assembly, Lavrov had said that the Security Council would be more democratic if countries from Africa, Asia, and Latin America were included.
In his address, he said that India and Brazil should be included in the Council for permanent membership. The Russian Foreign Minister said India and Brazil are promoting their applications to join the UN Security Council along with Japan and Germany, indicating multipolarity.

Of the five permanent members of the Council of 15 countries, the US, Britain, France, and Russia have supported a permanent seat for India in the UN body. Earlier, UK Ambassador to the UN Barbara Woodward said, 'We support permanent African representation on the Council, along with the creation of new permanent seats for India, Germany, Japan, and Brazil.'
Addressing the plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly on the 'Question of Security Council Membership and Growth and Augmentation of Security Council Membership', the Deputy Permanent Representative of France to the UN said that 'France's position is stable and well known. We want the Council to be more representative of today's world, in a way that further strengthens its authority and effectiveness.'
India is currently presiding over the council of 15 countries
India's current two-year term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council ends in December. India is currently chairing the Council of 15 countries.
Explain that this is the second time in its two-year term as an elected member of the UN Security Council that India has assumed the presidency of the council. India had earlier taken over the presidency of the UNSC in August 2021.
