It is worth noting that the Government of India created the post of Chief of Defense Staff in the year 2019. In January 2020, then General Bipin Rawat took over as the country's first Chief of Defense Staff. The post of CDS was lying vacant for a long time after the death of General Rawat on December 08, 2021.
Country's first retired 4-star rank officer
Lt Gen Chauhan (Retd) assumed the rank of a four-star rank general after taking over as the second CDS of India. Lt Gen Chauhan will be the first retired three-star rank officer in the country to return to service as a four-star rank officer. After his retirement as Eastern Army Commander last year, he served as Military Advisor in the National Security Council Secretariat headed by National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval.

Born on 18 May 1961, Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan was commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army in 1981. He is an alumnus of the National Defense Academy, Khadakwasla, and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. In the rank of Major General, he commanded an infantry division in the crucial Baramulla sector in the Northern Command. Later as a lieutenant general, he commanded a corps in the Northeast and later became the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command from September 2019 until he retired from service in May 2021.
Apart from these command appointments, he also held important staff appointments including the charge of Director General, Military Operations. Before this, he also served at the United Nations Mission in Angola. He retired from the Indian Army on 31 May 2021. Even after retiring from the Army, he continued to contribute to national security and strategic affairs. For distinguished and distinguished service in the Army, Lt Gen Anil Chauhan (Retd) was awarded Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.
Relaxation in the appointment rules of CDS
It is known that after the death of General Bipin Rawat, the government changed the rules for the appointment of new CDS and made him flexible. According to the earlier rule, only the four-star general, ie the Chief of the Army Staff, the Chief of the Naval Staff, and the Chief of the Air Staff, who held the post of Chief of the three Services, could become the CDS. But according to the new rules, three-star military officers of the level of lieutenant general, vice admiral, and air marshal can also become CDS.
