Manipur Violence: Firing between protesters and security forces, one BSF and two Assam Rifles personnel injured

Violence continues unabated in Manipur. On the night of June 6, there was an exchange of fire between the security forces and the protesters. A BSF jawan was seriously injured in the firing in the Sugnu area. Apart from this, two soldiers of Assam Rifles have also been hit by bullets. The Spear Corps of the Indian Army said that the security forces responded to the firing of the protesters. Assam Rifles jawans have been sent to Mantripakhuri for treatment. The rest of the team in the area is searching for the accused involved in the firing.

 

Firing continues for two consecutive days

Police said that Congress MLA K.K. The villagers are angry after 100 houses, including Ranjit's house, were set on fire on Saturday night. There has been an exchange of fire between militants and security forces for the last two days. On Sunday, before the arson, joint forces of the state police, including the Indian Reserve Battalion and the Border Security Force, along with village volunteers, had an encounter with the militants at the Nazareth camp. After this, the militants left their camp and fled. The villagers later set the camp on fire on Sunday night. In this, training was also given to newly recruited Kuki militants. The firing was also reported from Phayeng in Imphal West on Sunday, while Kuki militants set a sawmill on fire.

 

Report to be submitted in six months

The central government has constituted a three-member inquiry team to investigate the violence. The team includes retired IAS officer Himanshu Shekhar Das and retired IPS officer Prabhakar Aloka. Former Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ajay Lamba will head the probe team. The Center has asked to submit the probe report within a maximum of six months after the first meeting of the team. According to the order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, information about the reasons for the violence and how the violence spread across the state has been asked to be included in the investigation report.

The indefinite internet shutdown in Manipur since May 3 after violence broke out in the state has been challenged in the Supreme Court. The petitioners, advocate Chongtham Victor Singh and businessman Myengbam James, have submitted that despite the apparent improvement in the situation, the state government has repeatedly issued orders for a state-wide internet shutdown. Due to this people are not only experiencing fear, anxiety, and helplessness but are also unable to communicate with their near and dear ones.
