Mulayam Singh Yadav was called the wrestler of the political arena. He was adept at pinning down his opponents. Mulayam was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh thrice. He also became the Defense Minister of the country. However, there were two occasions in Mulayam's political career when he kept on becoming the Prime Minister. Today Netaji passed away during treatment at a hospital in Gurugram. We tell you the story that how Mulayam's dream of becoming PM could not be fulfilled.
The first time came in 1996 when the Congress was defeated in the Lok Sabha elections. Congress got 141 seats and BJP won 161 seats. Atal Bihari Vajpayee got an invitation to form the government. He became the Prime Minister but his government fell after 13 days. Now Congress had a chance but it was in no mood to form a khichdi government. Then VP Singh also refused to become PM. However, he forwarded the name of Bengal CM Jyoti Basu which was rejected by Politburo.
Now the names of Mulayam and Lalu Prasad Yadav were at the forefront of the Prime Minister's race. However, Lalu got out of it due to the fodder scam. The task of uniting everyone was entrusted to the big leader of the Left, Har Kishan Singh Surjit. He advocated Mulayam's name. It is said that preparations were also made for his swearing-in. However, Lalu and Sharad Yadav were not ready for this, which did not work out. After this HD Deve Gowda was sworn in as the PM.
The coalition government led by HD Deve Gowda soon fell. Elections were held again in 1999. Mulayam Singh won both Sambhal and Kannauj seats. Once again his name came forward for the post of PM. Once again the other Yadav leaders withdrew their hands. Such a situation, this was the second time when the PM's chair coming to Mulayam was removed. Later, in a rally, Mulayam also said that he could not become the Prime Minister because of Lalu Prasad Yadav, Sharad Yadav, Chandra Babu Naidu, and VP Singh.
