Pakistan National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf will hold a meeting with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers on Thursday for personal verification of the resignations of the former ruling party members of the National Assembly (MNA). This information has been given by The Express Tribune quoting the spokesperson of the National Assembly.
Ashraf said that PTI members would have to come one by one to get their resignations accepted. Speaking to reporters, he asserted that the process of verification of resignations cannot be done properly if members of the National Assembly come in groups.
Furthermore, the Speaker of the Pakistan National Assembly said that he would have to follow the constitution and the law on the issue of resignation, The Express Tribune reported. Raja Parvez Ashraf said that the members of the National Assembly have not written resignation letters.
The Express Tribune quoted Raja Parvez Ashraf as saying, the resignations were not written by the members. PTI members did not turn up even on the last summons. Significantly, 123 PTI members of the National Assembly resigned en masse on April 11, two days after party president Imran Khan was removed from the post of the prime minister through a no-confidence motion.
However, National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf on 17 April ordered the Assembly Secretariat to deal with the PTI MPs' resignations afresh and present them to him.
Earlier on Wednesday, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhary said that as per the law, an MLA needs to stand down and resign, however, "Every day new laws are made for PTI.
He said that the PTI MPs had written a letter to the National Assembly Speaker to resign. However, the response he received was unsatisfactory. He said Amir Dogar has spoken to the Speaker's office and will hold a meeting with party members Ashraf.
The National Assembly on Sunday announced a clear policy regarding the confirmation of resignations of PTI members, The Express Tribune reported. The National Assembly spokesperson said the PTI's request for joint appearance and acceptance of resignations is being heard once again.
The spokesperson further said that a reply to the letter sent by PTI vice-chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi on December 22 had been sent, according to The Express Tribune.
The National Assembly Secretariat announced that the PTI MPs' resignations could not be collectively verified "in any way" despite repeated requests from the party leadership to accept the resignations.
